Letter of Recomendation

To Whom It May Concern:I’m happy to have the opportunity to write a letter of recommendation for J.D. Leonard. I met J.D. this year by pure chance at his first Hooter’s Cup race. I since served as his crew chief for the 2006 season. I’ve worked with young development drivers before, and have never seen anyone like J.D.. While working with limited resources, he’s shown traits that set him far above anyone else in his category. The first of these traits is his driving skill. His first Hooter’s Cup race was at Kil-Kare Speedway, a very tight bull ring where I have seen, and driven, many laps. I knew that there was no way a 17 year old in his first race in a big car at this track would bring it home in one piece. I prepared him for this before the race. During the race, the car’s set up was not tuned to the track, and was so bad that the left front tire was worn to the cords. Despite this ailment, he still kept the car straight and brought it home without a dent. J.D. proved me wrong. I knew then that his driving skill was something special. The second area that impresses me about J.D. is his work ethic. This area is simply unparalleled among any other development driver I have seen. In so many instances, young drivers have equipment purchased and prepared for them, and have little worries other than driving. In J.D.’s case, he works relentlessly to support his family’s underfinanced, under-resourced team. For example, after the throttle hung open during a practice session and the car was nearly totaled, finances were very thin for repairing the car. Instead of purchasing a body, or hiring someone, J.D. took sheet metal and PVC pipe (instead of an English Wheel), and rebuilt the body himself. The body was so good that it made it through tech inspection with no questions. This is one of many instances throughout the summer where J.D. willingly did whatever it took in order to have the chance to race. Finally, one area that can have a profound effect on a team is chemistry. J.D.’s mature, appreciative, and positive attitude is the perfect catalyst for a strong team. Despite the many struggles that come with operating a low budget team, J.D. was always exceptionally up beat. This radiated from the driver’s seat, and throughout the crew. Thanks to his demeanor, I never had any problem finding people to be on our team, and work hard with J.D. towards a common goal. From a crew chief’s perspective, he always provided great feedback, and was very responsive to input. The best way I can summarize J.D.’s situation is that he’s a talented, hard working driver, whose skill has outpaced his team’s resources. Unfortunately I’ve seen too many times where people get noticed because they are well financed. This won’t happen to J.D., but this is where the Drive for Diversity has a great opportunity. J.D. offers everything that is needed in a foundation for an excellent race car driver. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can offer any additional insight. It’s been a great pleasure working with J.D., and I’m certain that anyone will experience the same.Best Regards, Darren Jones
